Words I Hope To Live By

    "I expect to pass through this world but once;
any good thing therefore that I can do, or any
kindness that I can show to any fellow-creature,
let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again."

    Vicious Twit

I know I'm not alone in my  observation of  the unfortunate trend in our culture to emulate all that bad behavior portrayed on those nauseating reality tv shows that seem to be cropping up with Tribble-like ferocity.   It seems to be so 'in' right now for some boob-tube Lemmings to say, to the closest unsuspecting bystander, the first unnecessarily mean-spirited thing that's been zapped into their tiny little brains.
Perhaps it's the sound of nervous laughter or the look of shock on the faces of those within earshot that seems so appealing...  and the hope for any bit of attention, however negative,  one might be craving... but really it's been done to death  and in most cases without a trace of cleverness.  I mean the days of  truly well crafted and humorous wisecracks are very much in  the past.  There are certainly no Dorothy Parkers on the 'Algonquin Round Table' that is Rock of Love, Big Brother, or Bridezillas... Yawn...
If you don't have anything nice and interesting, or at least original to say, please,  don't say anything at all.

    Dear Anonymous
It's a shame, I've received a lot of great comments that have inspired deep thought and I so wanted to have discussions with those who have responded to my journal entries, but I made it a rule long ago not to have open dialog with anonymous posters, too bad:(

    Bad Bad Cracker!!
I have been known to enjoy a delicious, salty, crunchy snack from time to time and when I do, I always share... with my two little dogs.  A movie just isn't the same when not accompanied by buttery popcorn or cheesy nachos and Grace and Luvie ever diligent with pleading eyes in my periphery.  I suppose I'm reinforcing some very bad habits, but hey, they're  my kids after all, and the very best friends a girl could ask for, so what's mine is theirs.

The pups are very light snackers, and when I do indulge them, they gently take whatever chip or nibbly I offer, find a comfortable spot , settle in and make a meal of it, but for some unknown reason... Grace has a problem with... Cheez-its.  I'll hand one over, and she'll snatch it, run across the room and spit it out.  She then proceeds to bark at and pounce on the evil cracker with her front paws until it's pulverized into pile of orange dust and we're all finally safe.  Of course this benefits no one... I have to put the movie on pause and break out the dust-buster to suck up the little mound of crumbs or I'll discover trails of tiny cheddar footprints throughout the house, or worse, she'll roll around in it staining her entire creamy coat, like some ancient victorious warrior covering himself in his dead enemy's blood.  Both dogs hate the noise of my little hand-vac and wind up shivering under the bed until they're quite sure the coast is clear... it's just all very irritating.

Now you're asking yourself, why not just stop it with the Cheez-its, and I agree that would be a very rational solution, but you're not here to see those pathetic little eyes praying for just one tiny morsel... besides, we're talking about  my favorite vegging-out snack.  I also keep hoping my sweet  Grace Kelly's gotten over this weird little quirk, I mean what is it about Cheese-it's that she finds so objectionable?  Is it those arrogant pointy corners, or that unspeakable perforation through the center?  How dare they be so F'in square and crispy! I mean, it's like they're so full of themselves looking all smug in that fancy schmancy flakey goodness!!!!  Those little salty bastards!!  TAKE THAT CRACKER!!!!

    Be Still My Beating Heart!!

I may have mentioned a time or two that my husband is the love of my life and how lucky I consider myself to be in such a happy nurturing relationship.  In the twenty or so years that I've been with Nel, no one has ever been able to so much as turn my head... until now.
His name is Inuk, he's gorgeous, he's only twenty-seven, and I'm in love!!
Actually Inuk is one of the three Beluga whales I've had the pleasure to meet last Tuesday.  I'm in a volunteer docent program at the Mystic Aquarium Institute for Exploration.  I've been going to the three hour training sessions for a month now and last week was the first time Inuk, Kela, Naku and I were formally introduced.
I sat with my legs folded Yogi style at the very edge of their habitat, just inches from these magnificent creatures and enjoyed what was as much for me an enrichment session as for the Belugas.  They were all three very inquisitive, and seemingly eager to interact with the staff and other docents.  Inuk especially seemed taken with me and spent most of his time inches from where I sat making eye contact as I gazed in awe at his beautiful face.  When our time was up and I reluctantly made my way out of the exhibit, I turned to catch him spy-hopping up out of the water to watch where I was going.  It was all I could do not to beg for permission to set up camp right by the cobbles like a groupie and devote my every moment to the three of them.
I just cannot wait until next Tuesday!!!

    A Few Recommendations...

    Books this month:

'Water For Elephants'  A very quick read, and I  finished in two days of page turning bliss.  I adore animals and Elephants are especially dear to my heart, add to that the fact that I am a hopeless romantic and this book was just a perfect little read for me and will be for anyone like me.  I'm tempted to leave all this behind and join the circus.

'The Pillars of the Earth'  Take this with you on vacation, you'll need some real time to sink your teeth into this epic.  Don't be put off by the size of this monster, you'll be wishing for more when you reach the last sentence, believe me.  I'm not a fan of medieval settings, but I was entranced by the tale of a stone mason's journey through the days of that time. Fascinating!!

I've just started 'Atonement', and I'm finding it to be a bit of a slow start, then again I'm pretty buzzed on cold meds at the moment, so I find myself rereading the same paragraph several times before comprehension actually sets in.  I'll let you know how I feel about it when I finish, although the fact that it has been on New York Times bestseller list for some time now may be good enough recommendation for you.

    Movies on DVD:

'Other Peoples Lives'  People please get past the subtitles and don't miss out on this incredible flick, as well as a lesson in what our lives might be like after  relinquishing more and more of our freedoms in this country.

'Reign Over Me'  Adam Sandler... who knew?  Have tissues ready.  I really enjoyed this, I think I'll rent it again soon.  Fantastic!!

'Michael Clayton'  All those nominations were well deserved!

    Hot Stuff!!!
Met friends for dinner last night.  We ate at this little Indian restaurant, Mirch Amasala in Groton, and everything was delectable, hot and spicey!  I highly recommend it.  Of course we had cocktails with our meal and not wanting the evening to end just as dinner did, decided on a few more potent potables someplace close by.  Someone mentioned Rosie's, a little place which was just down the road, and the fact that this establishment happened to be the local strip joint wasn't going to be a problem for us madcap little scamps.
The bar we sat at was actually situated far from the stage/poles, and I basically forgot I was even in a 'gentleman's club'.  I lost a few games of pool to my buddy before returning to the bar to freshen up my drink.
I'm not going to try and recreate the entire evening for you, but I'm embarrassed to admit it did end up with me draping my coat over and trying to reform one of the strippers... echhhhhh, what a freakin' cliche'.

In case you don't already know I'm a dog FREAK!!

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
    Take naps.
     Stretch before rising.
     Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.
    Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!
